Fall might be the best time of year to visit America's national parks. Summer crowds thin out, temperatures drop to comfortable hiking levels, and in many parks the landscape turns gold, red and amber. Here are five parks that are especially worth a visit in autumn, and what makes each one special this time of year.
1. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
Fall is peak season here for two reasons: golden aspens and the elk rut. Aspen groves usually turn in mid to late September, and meadows like Moraine Park fill with bull elk bugling to attract mates. It's one of the most memorable wildlife experiences in the country. Keep a safe distance and watch from the roadside or trail. High-elevation roads can close once snow arrives, so plan earlier in the season if you want the full scenic drive.

2. Yosemite National Park, California
After the summer rush, Yosemite Valley feels calmer. The black oaks and bigleaf maples turn gold, and the granite walls glow in the low autumn light. The waterfalls are usually at their lowest in fall, so come for the colours, the climbing views and the quieter trails rather than the thundering falls of spring.

3. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
Summer temperatures inside the canyon can be dangerous, so fall is a much better window for hiking below the rim. The South Rim is open all year, and autumn brings clearer air, cooler mornings and spectacular sunsets. Remember that it's always much hotter at the bottom than at the rim. Carry plenty of water and start early, even in October.

4. Everglades National Park, Florida
The Everglades flips the usual calendar: late fall marks the start of the dry season. As the water recedes, wading birds and alligators gather around the remaining pools, which makes wildlife easier to spot. Humidity and mosquitoes also start to ease off as the season goes on. It's a great time for kayaking, boardwalk trails and birdwatching.

5. Denali National Park, Alaska
Fall comes early in Alaska. By late August and early September the tundra turns deep red, orange and gold, and it's one of the most colourful landscapes anywhere. As the nights get darker, you might even catch the northern lights. The visitor season is short and services wind down in mid-September, so this is an early-fall trip.

Tips for a fall park trip
- Check park alerts before you go. Road closures, shuttle schedules and facility hours change in the shoulder season. The official park pages on nps.gov have the latest.
- Dress in layers. Fall mornings can be near freezing, and afternoons can still be warm. A soft tee under a fleece or flannel covers both.
- Go on a weekday if you can. Popular fall spots like aspen groves and scenic drives get busy on weekends.
- Plan around daylight. Days get shorter quickly in autumn, so start hikes early.
